Under the Dome: Arcane Colleges. Magic makes might n a Post Apocalyptic Fantasy Setting
In our last article, we explored Monster Hunter Guilds, the people who make a living dealing with the creatures that threaten life beneath and beyond the Domes. Some monsters crawl out of forgotten tunnels. Others are summoned by people who should have known better. Some simply evolved or adapted to the dangerous world beyond the Dome. And some, like Balaria’s enormous churnmaws, have become an important part of civilization itself.
But there is another force that makes survival possible under the Domes.
Magic.
The people living in the Domes know magic exists. They see spellcasters. They see enchanted objects. They hear stories about powerful mages and ancient magical ruins. But most common people have very little idea just how much magic is involved in keeping their world alive.
Magic isn’t simply something adventurers use to throw fireballs at monsters.
Magic is infrastructure.
Magic keeps the food growing.
Magic helps keep the monsters away.
Magic repairs the Domes.
Magic powers systems nobody fully understands anymore.
And much of that work happens inside the Arcane Colleges.
Magic Is Part of Survival
It is easy for someone living comfortably inside a Dome to take magic for granted.
A farmer sees crops growing underground and thinks someone planted them.
A family turns on a light and thinks of it as part of the building.
A traveler passes safely through a protected gate and doesn’t think about the magical wards keeping monsters away.
Someone sleeps beneath the Dome during a Chaos Storm and never considers why the walls aren’t shaking apart.
There are mages involved in all of those things.
The average citizen doesn’t need to know how.
That is part of the problem.
Magic has become so deeply integrated into civilization that most people only notice it when something goes wrong.
The Arcane Colleges
Arcane Colleges are more than schools where people learn how to cast spells.
They are centers of magical research, training, maintenance, experimentation, and preservation.
Some are enormous institutions with hundreds of students, professors, researchers, apprentices, laboratories, libraries, and magical workshops.
Others are little more than a handful of spellcasters maintaining an ancient facility that nobody else understands.
Every Dome has different needs, and its Arcane Colleges have developed accordingly.
An institution in Balaria might focus heavily on magical engineering, industrial applications, Grind, and environmental survival.
An institution in Crystalia might specialize in magical power systems and the interaction between Grind and spellcraft.
Gloaming Arbor could have colleges focused on ancient magic, nature, spirits, and the preservation of magical knowledge.
A smaller Dome might have only a single Arcane College.
That college might also be responsible for keeping the entire Dome alive.
Growing Food Where Nothing Should Grow
One of the most important jobs magic performs is also one of the least glamorous.
Food.
Underground agriculture is difficult.
There is little natural sunlight. Soil quality varies wildly. Water has to be managed carefully. Temperatures need to remain stable. Some crops simply don’t grow well underground.
Magic changes that equation.
Spells can provide artificial sunlight. Enchantments can improve soil. Druids and nature mages can encourage plants to grow in hostile environments. Magical irrigation systems can move and purify water.
Some underground farms might have entire ceilings enchanted to simulate the movement of the sun.
Others might use magical crystals to provide the light necessary for crops.
A particularly advanced agricultural district could have teams of mages whose entire job is maintaining the magical conditions that keep food production running.
Most people never meet them.
They just eat.
And that’s exactly how the system is supposed to work.
Magic Keeps the Dome Strong
The most important magical work, however, may be happening above everyone’s heads.
The Domes themselves are not simply massive physical structures.
They are magical defenses.
They protect settlements from the Chaos Storms.
Maintaining them requires an enormous amount of magical knowledge.
Arcane Colleges train specialists who understand the magical architecture of the Domes. They study fluctuations in the protective fields, identify weaknesses, repair damaged enchantments, and reinforce areas that have been exposed to unusually powerful Chaos.
Sometimes the work is visible.
A team of mages might be seen repairing a glowing section of the Dome after a Storm.
Most of the time it isn’t.
The magical maintenance happens behind walls, beneath streets, or inside restricted chambers where ordinary citizens aren’t allowed.
Some of these facilities may be older than the cities surrounding them.
Some may have been built by people whose names have been forgotten.
And some may contain magical systems nobody completely understands.
The People Who Keep the Shield Standing
Imagine a mage whose entire career is spent maintaining the Dome.
They aren’t famous.
They don’t go on adventures.
They don’t duel evil wizards.
They don’t become legendary heroes.
They spend twenty years studying magical resonance so they can identify when a section of the Dome is beginning to weaken.
They know exactly what a particular vibration means.
They know which crystals need replacing.
They know which ancient runes cannot be touched.
They know that if their calculations are wrong, thousands or millions of people could die.
That is the kind of magic that keeps civilization alive.
And there are probably dozens of different specialties involved.
Some mages monitor the Dome.
Others maintain its magical anchors.
Some work on the physical structure.
Others study Chaos energy.
Some specialize in repairing damage caused by Storms.
Some investigate why certain sections of the Dome behave differently than others.
And some are trying to understand what the people who originally created the Domes actually intended them to do.
Fighting Monsters With Magic
The Arcane Colleges aren’t only concerned with defense against the Chaos Storms.
They also prepare people to deal with monsters.
A monster breaking through a tunnel beneath a city is not simply a job for a Monster Hunter Guild.
The creature might have magical abilities.
It might be resistant to conventional weapons.
It might be capable of manipulating minds, creating portals, corrupting living things, or disrupting the Dome itself.
Arcane Colleges develop spells and magical techniques specifically designed to combat these threats.
Some mages specialize in defensive wards.
Others become battle-mages.
Some study the magical anatomy of monsters.
Others develop containment spells that allow dangerous creatures to be captured rather than killed.
This creates another natural relationship between Arcane Colleges and Monster Hunter Guilds.
The hunters know how monsters behave.
The mages know how magic behaves.
Together, they can deal with threats that neither group could handle alone.
Magic the Commoners Never See
This is where the true depth of magic under the Dome begins to emerge.
The average citizen might know about healing magic.
They might know about magical lights.
They might have seen a wizard cast a spell.
But they probably don’t know about the hundreds of magical systems operating around them.
There could be enchantments controlling air circulation in underground districts.
Magical wards could prevent certain creatures from entering residential areas.
Spells might detect contamination in water supplies.
Enchanted machinery could help process Grind.
Magical barriers could stabilize mines.
Runes might reinforce bridges and tunnels.
Arcane systems could regulate temperature in agricultural chambers.
There could even be magical networks that monitor the health of the Dome itself.
The people living there don’t think of these things as magic anymore.
They think of them as the way things work.
Arcane Colleges and Grind
Of course, no discussion of magic under the Dome can ignore Grind.
Grind is power.
Grind is commerce.
Grind is a source of conflict.
And Grind is deeply connected to magic.
Arcane Colleges have spent generations studying how Grind interacts with spellcasting and magical devices. Some institutions may depend on Grind for their research. Others might consider its use dangerous or unethical.
This creates an interesting relationship between Arcane Colleges and the Grind Syndicates.
The syndicates want access to magical knowledge.
The colleges want access to Grind.
Neither side necessarily trusts the other.
A researcher might secretly purchase illegal Grind to conduct an experiment.
A syndicate might infiltrate a college looking for a magical formula.
A professor could discover that one of their colleagues has been selling restricted research.
And somewhere in the middle of all of it, the people who actually need Grind to survive are simply trying to keep the lights on.
The Price of Magical Progress
Magic makes life under the Dome possible.
But it also creates risks.
Every magical system has consequences.
An experiment might go wrong.
A spell might interact with Chaos energy.
An enchanted machine might become unstable.
A researcher might discover something that was never meant to be discovered.
And the more powerful the magic becomes, the greater the potential consequences.
Arcane Colleges therefore have their own rules, restrictions, rivalries, and secrets.
Some are cautious.
Some are ambitious.
Some believe humanity needs to master magic before the Chaos eventually destroys the Domes.
Others believe that attempting to control Chaos is exactly what caused many of the world’s problems in the first place.
There is no shortage of arguments.
There is also no shortage of funding for whichever side can prove itself right.
The Secrets Beneath the Colleges
Every good Arcane College should have secrets.
Perhaps its oldest library contains spells from before the Domes existed.
Perhaps one of its professors has discovered that the Dome isn’t merely blocking Chaos.
Perhaps it is transforming it.
Maybe the original builders of the Dome are still alive somewhere.
Maybe they aren’t.
Perhaps the Dome requires something from the people living beneath it.
Maybe someone knows exactly what happens if the magical systems maintaining the Dome are shut down.
And perhaps there are rooms inside the college that even the faculty aren’t allowed to enter.
Because knowledge is power.
And under the Dome, power is survival.
Arcane Colleges as Campaign Locations
For a D&D campaign, an Arcane College can serve as far more than a wizard school.
It can be an employer.
It can be a source of quests.
It can be a political faction.
It can be a place where characters learn about the world.
It can also be a dungeon.
The characters might be hired to retrieve a magical artifact from a forgotten laboratory. They might investigate a magical experiment that has gone wrong. They could escort researchers into the wilderness to study Chaos Storm remnants.
Perhaps a section of the Dome is failing and the characters must venture into a sealed maintenance chamber.
Maybe a professor has disappeared.
Maybe something escaped from a laboratory.
Maybe someone is sabotaging the Dome.
Or perhaps the characters discover that the Arcane College has been hiding something from the city for generations.
Magic Is Everywhere
The most important thing to understand about magic under the Dome is that it isn’t rare.
It is everywhere.
It is in the farms.
It is in the mines.
It is in the walls.
It is in the lights.
It is in the defenses.
It is in the machinery.
It is in the hospitals.
It is in the weapons.
It is in the Dome itself.
The common people don’t need to understand all of it.
In fact, most probably shouldn’t.
They have enough to worry about.
They need food. They need jobs. They need safe homes. They need protection from monsters and Chaos Storms.
They trust that someone else is keeping the magic running.
And someone is.
Thousands of people across the Domes dedicate their lives to making sure that the magical systems civilization depends upon continue functioning.
The farmer doesn’t need to know which enchantment makes his crops grow.
The child doesn’t need to know which ward keeps monsters away from her home.
The merchant doesn’t need to know how the Dome absorbs the energy of a Chaos Storm.
They only need to wake up tomorrow and find everything still working.
That is the greatest achievement of the Arcane Colleges.
They make magic so reliable that people forget it is the reason they survived.
And perhaps that is also what makes the Arcane Colleges so dangerous.
Because when something that important finally stops working, everyone is going to notice.
